Parent Handbook

/ Sign-Out

Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. To better assure this safety, we require your child to be signed in and out by a parent or authorized person. Signatures need to be the full last name, it cannot be initials. Children must be walked to their classroom and released directly to the teacher on duty. Students are not allowed to walk to the classroom unattended. Until the teacher recognizes the authorized persons allowed to pick up your child, they will be asked to show I.D. before release.*Reminder – Please pick up your child promptly. School times are 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. or 9:00 to 12:30 p.m.  There will be a $5.00 charge if you are more than 10 minutes late. An additional $5.00 will be charged for each increment of 10 minutes for late pickup. If an emergency arises, please contact us @ 480-917-0561.


We emphasize the goal behavior we want, and try to “reward” the child when we see good behavior. This good behavior is rewarded with verbal praise and hugs! If a problem arises, we redirect the child to another activity. As a last resort we use a very brief “time-out”. This is so the child can think about the behavior and be separated for a period of time. After the “time-out” the teacher will remind the child of the wrong behavior and have them rejoin the group. The child is always informed of how much they are loved, it is just the “wrong” behavior that is not liked! Most children do very well in a system that rewards their efforts at self-control in this way.

Parent Involvement

You are welcome to visit classes at any time. The teacher may not be able to stop what they are doing to spend time with you, but know that you are indeed welcome. Feel free to stay as long as you like. We are proud of our school and love to share classroom experiences with you.We ask for parents to give two hours of time per month, helping in the classroom. If a parent is unable to work in the room, they will be asked to assist with “take home” projects.Birthdays – Birthdays are special days for children. If you would like to bring a special treat to share with their friends, just let your child’s teacher know. Please note that all treats need to be store bought items, so we can verify ingredients for those students with allergies. If your child has a summer birthdays we can arrange a special day as their “birthday”.Nutrition – a nutritious snack will be served to your child each day. Monthly there is a sign-up for: special snack items, party items, counting games, etc. *note we are a peanut free school.


Clothing – Due to the variety of activities that your child will participate in, we recommend that students dress in comfortable play clothes. We want your child to feel free to participate in “messy” projects without fear of ruining his/her :”dress clothes”. Additionally, sneakers (rather than sandals) make the best play-ground shoes.T-Shirts – We ask that you purchase a KDC T-shirt for your child. This shirt would be worn at all Theme Exploration Days. From experience we have found that it is easier to identity our school group when dressed alike. Shirts will be available to order at the Open House.

Show and Tell

Show and Tell is a favorite time for students and teachers. Since KDC cannot be held responsible for personal property that is lost or damaged, we recommend that students not bring valuable or fragile items for Show and Tell. Your child’s teacher will notify you as to the designated Show and Tell day for your child’s class. Show and Tell is canceled on field trip days and party days.

Theme Exploration Days

We plan on taking four Theme Exploration Days per school year (field trip). You will be notified well in advance of the date, time and location. Parents are responsible to drive their children to and from the field trip location, and all children need a parent to stay with them. We encourage parents to work out car pool plans when possible. *Occasionally, the Theme day may be different from your child’s regular scheduled preschool day. *School t-shirts are worn on all Theme Exploration Days.

Health and Safety

Your child’s health and safety are very important to us. You will be asked to file an immunization record with us at Open House. If your child has special health problems or needs, please let us know. Illnesses – Unfortunately students may experience various illnesses from time to time. Should your child become ill at school, you will be notified immediately and your child will be isolated from other students for his/her comfort and the health of other students. We care about your child and are concerned when he/she is ill. PLEASE notify the school if your child is going to be absent. If your child has been ill (i.e. running a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea) PLEASE wait 24 hours before returning to school. In our effort to control the spread of communicable diseases such as measles, chicken pox, etc., please notify the school office if your child has contracted such an illness. Medication Policy – KDC does not administer any medications to students. Pesticides – Spraying is done monthly at night, when children are not on campus. Emergency Procedures – Based on the nature of the emergency, 911 would be contacted first, with a follow-up call to the parents. Parents will always be informed of any “scrapes or bruises” that may occur during school hours. Special Needs Children – We are not equipped to enroll special needs children, i.e. mentally and physically handicapped or severely emotionally disturbed.


Kids Discovery Club carries liability insurance in compliance with the State of Arizona requirements.Inspection Reports – These are available at school site. Financial Policies

Tuition – The registration fee and the first month’s tuition is due at Registration. The second payment is due August 1st. Tuition is due on the 1st of each month through April. Checks may be made payable to Kids Discovery Club or K.D.C. Please note student’s name on your check. Payments may be mailed to the school or dropped off at the school. There will be a $25.00 late fee charged on payments made after the 5th. There is a $25.00 fee charged for checks returned for Non-sufficient funds. Tuition is based upon the total number of sessions per school year. That figure is then divided into ten equal payments. Therefore, tuition is not altered for scheduled days off such as Christmas, Easter, or Spring Break.Enrollment – Children are enrolled in the Spring through a phone-in registration. Parents are required to fill out a simple form and pay a registration fee. Prior to school starting, parents will receive an Open House letter. That letter will inform you of necessary immunization records and emergency information. Withdrawal – Families may experience a variety of changes in the course of a year. Should it become necessary to withdraw your child from K.D.C., a two week notice is required to help with our planning. Tuition is due as long as the child is registered at the school. KDC reserves the right to terminate a child’s enrollment when a child is absent longer that 2 weeks and we have not received any communication from the parents.Withdrawal may also be necessary if child/parent are not adjusting to our program. This would be preceded with parent/teacher communication. Adjustment due to Illness – Adjustments to tuition will only be made in the case of serious illness with a duration of over two weeks.
